Reading is at the core of our curriculum at Newcroft. Being able to read unlocks the curriculum and the world beyond school for our children, and we firmly believe working together in partnership with parents is fundamental to developing children's reading ability and enjoyment for reading.
We teach early reading through Phonics. We have purchased a new phonics scheme called ‘Success for All’ from the Fischer Family Trust. This scheme has been validated by the Department for Education.
There will be a parents' portal available to all parents for additional help and advice, as well as a wealth of resources, including all of the books your children will be reading in school and at home, as a digital version. Children will love viewing their reading homework on their tablet or other device! Details of this will be provided by your child's teacher, in their home school diary.
Lots more information about our chosen scheme, Success For All Phonics can be found on our Early Reading and Phonics Curriculum page here.
Meetings are held throughout the year to support parents with phonics and early reading.
Further details will be sent out via Weduc nearer the time.
At home support packs: Following the parent meeting in September, children will be sent home with support packs. These contain flash cards with the mnemonic rhymes on, alphabet strips and sound mats from the new scheme (Success for All Phonics). It is expected that the children practice these alongside their reading on a frequent basis.
Your child’s reading book should be kept inside this zip up pack and these materials need to be brought into school every day to be used in the daily reading lesson.
Homework: Children will make more progress if they are supported regularly at home and given the opportunity in school. The compulsory homework recommends children read at home for 5-10 minutes at least 3 times a week for Reception and Year 1 and this increases to 10 minutes in Year 2. Optional homework will also be set by the class teacher and this can sometimes be phonics/reading based. This will be placed inside your child’s reading zip wallet and instructions will be glued in their diary.
