Autumn Term 1 2026

Welcome to Year 3!

Curriculum

This half term, we will be learning all about the Stone Age in our topic 'Stone Alone'  and explore the Paleolithic and Mesolithic eras in our History lessons in further detail. This will conclude with our Stone Age workshop, which will take place in school.

In English, our class text will be Stone Age Boy by Satoshi Kitamura. The children will use their reading comprehension skills to develop a deeper understanding of the story, exploring the characters, setting and key events. The children will then use the story as inspiration for a range of writing, including a narrative, diary entry, non-chronological report and recount, developing their skills in planning, vocabulary, sentence structure and organisation.

In Maths, Year 3 will be learning about place value, developing their understanding of the value of each digit within a number and using this knowledge to compare and order numbers. They will then move on to addition and subtraction, where they will develop their confidence in using a range of strategies to solve calculations and apply their learning to problem-solving activities.

In the wider curriculum, the children will broaden their knowledge and understanding across a range of subjects. In Science, they will learn about nutrition and diet, exploring the importance of a balanced and healthy lifestyle, as well as learning about the human skeleton and its role in supporting and protecting the body. In PSHE, the children will explore family and relationships, developing their understanding of different types of families, positive relationships and how to build respectful and supportive connections with others. In addition, the children will learn about democracy and develop their understanding of how democratic decisions are made, the importance of having a voice and how they can contribute to decisions within their school and wider community.
