Reading is at the heart of our school curriculum. We firmly believe that being able to read unlocks the curriculum for our children and we are extremely proud of how we teach reading and inspire pupils through high quality literature at Newcroft.
We teach reading explicitly and implicitly as part of our daily English lessons. This includes VRIC sessions, daily phonics lessons, group reading, interventions, 1:1 reading with teachers, support staff and volunteers.
Our pupils are also taught the skills of reading and are immersed in literature through the foundation curriculum.
Reception and Year 1 children are given an individual reading book from Success for All Phonics scheme that directly correlates with their phonics ability and the phoneme-grapheme correspondence they are learning in phonics lessons. These are called shared readers and all have a different step labelled on the book. This ensures reading is personalised and maximises progress. The children also have a second book that consolidates all the previous phoneme- grapheme correspondences the children have previously learned. Children from Years 2 -6 read book banded books, following the UK book banding system and also take home reading for pleasure books from the library to promote a love of reading. We use a range of book schemes and individually sourced texts from the first class authors to inspire our children
