Curriculum
Welcome to Year 4!
In Autumn 2, Year 4 will be learning all about our new topic 'Ouch, Zap, Ping'. In English, our class text is 'Thomas Edison' by Margaret Frith, a factual book exploring the life of the famous American inventor. It explains how Edison's curiosity and determination helped him create many important inventions including the phonograph, the motion picture camera and the electric light bulb. In Autumn 2, we'll be writing a diary entry, an explanation text and poetry.
In Science, the children will be exploring electricity and how simple circuits work. In addition, they will investigate which materials are good conductors and insulators and learn how to use switches to control electrical components. They will also think carefully about how electricity is used safely in everyday life.
In Art, the children will be researching the work of Walter De Maria, an artist famous for his piece called The Lightning Field in New Mexico. The children will create their own lightning-themed artwork, experimenting with a range of techniques and materials such as oil pastels, chalk and marbling.
PE Days
Mrs Hawksworth’s class has PE on Wednesday and Thursday.
Mrs Thompson’s and Mrs Wick’s class has PE on Monday and Wednesday.
Please ensure that children have the correct PE kit, suitable for both indoor and outdoor activities.
Reading
This half term, children will continue to take part in our Regular Readers initiative.
We kindly remind parents that children need to read at least three times per week to qualify for the Regular Reader Treat at the end of the term. This reward celebrates those who have consistently met the reading expectation throughout the half term.
Thank you for your continued support in encouraging a love of reading at home!
Homework
Weekly homework will be set on a Monday and due in the following Monday. Please check in your child’s home school diary for the insert each week - this will also be set out via WEDUC to parents each week.
Your child will also be given weekly spellings on a Monday. These spellings will then be tested on the following Monday during our weekly spelling lesson.
Times Tables Rockstars logins are stuck in the Home School Diaries. It is important that the children practise as often as possible as this will help support them in their multiplication check in June.
